We live in rural SE GA and switched to fiber optic internet several months ago. We have had nothing but problems. Maybe it's the company. I don't know. Our service drops randomly several times a day. We bought two extenders, thinking the router was too small, and that helps when it's in the mood.

Unfortunately, the only alternatives are either no better or too fucking expensive. Xfinity's prices doubled once our first year was done. T Mobile's HINT device drops service whenever it storms. Satellite is $169/month plus the cost of the dish. It was getting better under Biden. Now? Forget it.

I’ve been using Verizon’s “5G” (whatever that is) for a couple years now - it is a small white box that picks up signals from the tower, just like a cell-phone. 100% reliable - no cables, wires, etc., MUCH cheaper, works great! If you can get it, try it, also think some other companies have similar.

Oma-Trisha-F @oma-trisha-f.bsky.social

T Mobile has one. It drops during storms. They told us outright they won't put any more towers up out here - it's a rural area. Verizon charged me for a mistake on my cellphone bill 4 years ago. We're still fighting. I REFUSE to pay for their fuck-up. IDGAF if it's on my credit report.

I have Xfinity now and I’m just so tired of their customer service, which you HAVE to contact them because they will just randomly double your bill. The people in my area with fiber have had a good experience, and I’m tired of haggling for a basic utility

Some Dude @networkmonkey.bsky.social

Network nerd here! Extenders won’t help fiber optic connections. If sounds like your wireless is what’s dropping. Try looking up how to change your channels on your wireless setup. Also be aware that things like microwaves, fluorescent lights, and the human body can affect wifi.

1. I know it's the wifi. 2. They've had techs out here 3 times in 3 months. The last time they were here the numbers on the monitor were higher inside than out, so there was also an issue with the fiber. They replaced the inside cable. 3. Huh what?

1/2 WV as well-we’re moving & can change providers. The way the FCC authorized prioritization of BB launch in rural states 1: DHS priority spots (police & state and local gov) 2. Hospitals & schools 3.Agricultural businesses 4. Rural Main Street- but shortwave radio may be our best choice soon.

2/2 worst case scenario it’s we can receive shortwave domestic or international stations over inexpensive equipment (<$100) (stock up on batteries or get a small solar panel) & communicate over CB radio. For entertainment we are also getting a dvd player. Our library has thousands of dvds.

3/3 we’re building our home library- sanity. Part of this thread is about StarLink and their contract vs. FCC control of satellite vs. broadband. I’m adding thoughts on what to do if none of us has access to cell phones, landlines, broadcast or cable. Physical media is good. CB and shortwave too.
