I also suspect that part of it is that a lot of the people doing PR for Newsom view his transphobia and hatred of unhoused people as a plus, rather than disqualifying him from any leadership role in determining our nation's future

Every time I look at Newsom I feel like I did the week I worked at the fried dough booth at Taste of Chicago when I was 15. I had to go down to the basement to strip out of my clothes before showering to remove the fine patina of grease.

As a Chicagoan living in Boston for 15 yrs I think you’re spot on about the costal elite thing. That Pritzker doesn’t cut enough of a visual contrast to Trump is also true, but not b/c he’s not photogenic—I actually think he looks quite stately on camera & believe that he will get his time soon.

I don’t doubt that’s part of it. Today’s media seems to also eschew “adults acting like adults” as opposed to “adults acting wacky”. Media preferring stunts over substance. Not that’s there’s anything wrong with some stunts, but it’s 95%+ infotainment now, IMHO, to ‘get clicks’.
