See the bulk of the comments ( click on "567 more comments." ) to this post in January by a Substack founder Chris Best on Subsack ( via the internet archive ) for most of the reasons why. How many last straws do you need to abandon a platform? #nzpol #substack
Thanks David. Twitter did not provide a cent of revenue. Substack supports the livelihoods of at least three families. This decision would require me to force hardship on at least 10 people that are supported by The Kākā. This is not a costless decision.
I realise the founders of Substack provided financial support to the Kaka at the start & it has enabled you & all those supported to do wonderful ( if not vital ) work shining a light on the issues we face. [ thekaka.substack.com/p/why-the-ka... ] but unless The Kaka is being offered special deal...
... then It maybe the case that the move to another platform, or better yet self hosting ( as done by Molly White @molly.wiki ) may enable The Kaka to better support your mission & maybe even more staff & families. Sweeping the issues with Substack under the carpet may not be a viable strategy.
Apple may have forced their hand but it is yet another reason to leave substack.
I totally understand why people have left and are leaving. But it is really complex. I'd like to leave, but for the numbers of paid and free subscribers I have, Substack costs me far less than any other option. This doesn't mean I couldn't chose to pay more on ethical grounds...
because ethics is certainly a part of my financial decision-making. But right now, although the amount I earn from Substack isn't anywhere close to enough to live on, it's currently a large part of my income. I've got a few more months to figure out my long-term options, but changing platforms now,
when I might decide to stop writing my newsletter completely at the end of the year, would cost me a lot of money I don't have.
