William Penn never lived in Ireland.
William Penn never lived in Ireland.
I was in Ireland and saw a plaque about him being from that particular city. Of course this was decades ago and the details are a little fuzzy. It might have been his family, if not he, himself. I took a picture of it at the time, but God knows what happened to it.
Now I'm feeling old!
He may have VISITED there, but he was BORN in Temple Hill, London, and died in England, after establishing Pennsylvania...
Here - the link takes you to a loooong page so I just screenshoted the Google page instead
Here, too www.buildingsofireland.ie/buildings-se... And here www.irishamerica.com/2023/03/in-t...
My Isiah came from farther north, Leitrim and Fermanagh..
Ah! My family's from the mountains of County Wicklow 🙂
Oliver Cromwell is the most notorious person (villain) in Irish history, Penn was never on THAT side of things, so got less press in the history story.
OK, he lived there, but not born there, And NOT Irish by heritage in any case.. That wasn't anything I'd run into in my studies of Irish history.
Irish history books tend to overlook the Quakers.
As do American history books.
So apparently, according to the 2nd article, William Penn converted to being a Quaker, which was illegal, got arrested, arguedthat the law was archaic & got released, & when his father found out about it, he was so angry he called him back to England.
Much to the surprise of Samuel Pepys, at the start of this thread!🤣
Being ANYTHING other than CoE was bad; VERY bad, and could result in death.
Oh yes. I laugh to myself when I think of how this administration wants to take control of the county and it's like, You have NO idea how long Irish Americans will fight.
Oh, I do, I TRULY do.
THAT makes sense.
I also HAVE Quaker blood in one of my lines, through an ancestor born in 1630, Middlesex Colony, mass..
I was surprised when I saw it, at the time.
