I'm aware of that. I even read some years ago (at some point between 2014 and 2021) about an elderly man in Western Ukraine (Carpatians) who had retrofitted his car with the same tech. Since he lived in the countryside he needed his car, yet he couldn't afford to fill the tank the conventional way.

Part of this may be people trying to get a fill-up in expectation of continuing shortages. One consequence is that fuel will be wasted waiting in line and driving around looking for open gas stations. Even if they shut their engines off when stopped, they will go through significant amounts of fuel.

The Russian people have an established history of murdering their leadership and creating a new government when things get too dystopian. We just need them to remember their heritage. No gas, no food, no internet, is a recipe for angry people with guns and nothing to lose roaming the streets.
