Not to overly defend Democrats, but there is a valuable distinction between reaching out to areas that traditionally vote Republican by reaching out to them directly and explaining your policies vs pandering to them by throwing immigrants and queer people under the bus in order to appear "tough".

There are a lot of people in these regions who are more progressive than their state's political allegiance would imply, and many people who are simply politically disengaged due to some mix of disillusionment and lack of information.
