I was on the fringes of a cult for a while w/o knowing it. The guy at the top surrounded himself w/ sketchy people. He knew dirt on them all, so he could throw them under the bus before anything ever came out about him. I've wondered if that's why Trump picked some of the worst officials imaginable

Yes, but Trump is destroying so many institutions. Maybe it’s just Trump being nihilistic, but it could also be part of an ideology that seeks to turn the US into a dystopian state that resembles pre-democratic societies.

Trump also has a massive personal grievance against the CDC, FDAm HHS and by extension all government support of medical research. So appointing the RFK wrecking ball and his hideous minions suited Trump and his addled mouthbreather voters. It's never something deep.
