I'm sure most residents are happy that dangerous driving is being curbed. Of course the speeders are crying and @wgntv.com is leading with them, even though they are breaking the law and endangering residents in the area. Call your alder and tell them you support speed cameras.

Yes, let's hand more cameras to a corrupt police department as we head into an age of fascism. More people should hesitate when a tool can be used narrowly for good and broadly foe great harm.

They aren't operated by the police department. They're operated by the department of transportation. Cameras don't pull people over just bc they are black. If you want less policing, automated enforcement is a great way to help keep the public safe and keep racist cops out of more people's lives.

You're barking up the wrong tree. I am well versed in the issue and have read the dozens of stories that investigate the use of speed cameras in our city. I'm also intimately familiar with the dangers posed by reckless driving. Does Minnesota have speed cameras?

Are you well versed in how dictatorships operate? Because that is the relevant point here. Minnesota is a state, not a city. But Minneapolis did just put up its first 5 speed cameras this summer, and yes, I object to that too.

I can walk and chew gum at the same time. Why don't you stick to opining about Minneapolis and STFU about Chicago.

That's a different tool. I also don't like surveillance. I applaud that Evanston, just north of Chicago has pulled their automated license plate readers because of ICE. I realize that its a slippery slope and safeguards need to be in place. It's a lot more nuanced than you're making it out to be.

We have a serious problem with traffic violence. I experience it first hand daily. And as much as I'd like to drop boulders in every street, I have to deal with reality and do what I can to make our streets safer. I hope all of these cameras are gone in a few years, unneeded.

The government-owned cameras belong to a different dept? My bad. No way the state or the police will ever misuse the footage if they are owned by the dept of transportation. As we know from history, putting surveillance tools into the right office budget is a good way to protect people's rights.

I support diy traffic calming, &I know it usually doesn't last long. I've been advocating for safe streets for years and haveI participated in guerilla operations. I am a volunteer crossing guard at my kid's school. Traffic cameras are a tool that can quickly be deployed and are proven effective.

Your argument narrowly focuses on the value of cameras in ticketing speeders. I am talking about how resources can be misused as democracy erodes, in particular against disfavored groups. I am not opining about Chicago. I am opining about the tools that authoritarian govs use to surveil residents.

Cops also use speeding tickets as a revenue source and we already give them enough of our city budgets. Fuck these cameras and fuck the cops

These are administrative tickets. It's handled by the department on transportation. Would you prefer that cops pulled people over to ticket them for driving violations?

Yeah. I'm talking about solving a problem that everyday people deal w which is traffic violence. I'm talking about preventing more kids from being killed today & tomorrow. I'm able to fight for defunding the po, eliminating $ bail & safer streets simultaneously. I can take a half a loaf as a win.

Yes. We don't want to be a dystopian society where computers and cameras issue tickets. Because where does it stop then? Plus there's evidence they routinely make mistakes. I know this article's UK but it's all the same. speedingfinecalculatoruk.com/when-incorre...

No I'm just anti surveillance and based on the amount of tickets from that one camera it's being over used. Also the cops 100% use them to do fucked shit with the ones that already exist

It's .2 percent of drivers that go through the area that have been ticketed. Reckless driving degrades the quality of life for residents. I prefer hardened traffic calming that physically slows down drivers but until we get there, I support ticketing reckless drivers. bsky.app/profile/star...

If it's next to a park, maybe it's fine. Most of the speed traps where I live are completely unnecessary, non residential highways for example where they set the speed limit to 35mph for no reason other than to give ppl tickets

We're talking about the city of Chicago. A dense urban area where thousands of people are maimed each week because of car crashes. Also. Speeding kills. It kills near parks & also in the "middle of nowhere." It's not okay to speed in some areas and not in others. It's antisocial & deadly.

Yeah I just see posts like this right next to posts about ICE using all the cameras to arrest immigrants and wanting to add a bunch more so idk i still don't want more cameras while our govmnt is trying to build their surveillance police state
