Going on about capitalism is a gift to the rich. (1) They don’t actually like capitalism. They don’t want to compete - they just want to dominate. (2) If it is just 'capitalism is bad', then Trump should be a left-wing wet dream - he’s tearing down whatever scraps of capitalism are left in America.

Capitalism is bad, but what Trump (and other authoritarian leaders) is replacing it with is worse.

The Rich alao like Socialism when the money flows in one direction - towards them. You are correct. They have no principles other than gaining and hoarding money by any means necessary.

💯 Trump is waging class war, turbocharging the return to a feudal society. I think the Dems, etc. need to communicate tnat democracy, free speech, etc., aren’t just high-minded ideals - they’re our defence against the rich/parasites/criminals at the top. But they can't because, you know...

Where to begin on this take... It's giving "the theory of evolution is just a theory" It's giving "irrational numbers aren't a thing because math is always rational" It's a child butting in on an adult conversation to give their VERY SMART opinion Read more post less.

I'm always impressed when someone says "I'm not defending capitalism" After saying "now, capitalism isn't the problem"

It's an an annoying knee-jerk response from most people who don't realize that they have been brainwashed into the normalization of capitalism. They do this without understanding their place as laborers in an inherently adversarial relationship w/ capitalists. (Owners of MOP) siding w/ the adversary

He is not tearing down capitalism though. He's setting fire to the "free market", capitalism is when wealth dictates your ability to influence policy. You know, like all those private dinners people pay to have with him, or "investing" in his crypto, or funding his campaign. He's leveraging it

Fair enough. I've been using the terms interchangeably, but you've opened my eyes - thank you. I was thinking tariffs (and subsidies and government contracts for welfare queens like Musk) were anti-capitalism, but they're not. They're anti-free market.

Interestingly you also mentioned Feudalism in another post, Feudalism was when landowners had the influence over policy pre English civil war But yes free market is not capitalism is a distinction we should be clear on, most socialist states have a free market still, it works for luxury goods. 🤷🏼‍♂️

"Influence over policy?" Nobles MADE policy for their fiefdoms, other than the Kings and Queens above them.

Kings and queens made the policy, their nobles had their ear and therefore influence, they used that influence to give themselves a lot of leeway. Much the same as Elon musk has and much the way as The east India company did during our brief time as a mercantilist nation to horrifying results

The Nobles made their own policies adjacent to the monarchy. They were the overlords of their own area and areas resources.

Who dictated who the nobles were? The freedoms they had were given by the ultimate power (the king) and they in turn had influence over that power, through the magnum concilium, Can you give any examples of nobles who enact rules in opposition to the monarchy's position?

Just out of interest, what would you regard as a socialist state? Are you thinking of countries like Sweden?

Most of Scandinavia are democratic socialist states (my preferred system) although they are slipping to the right slowly. The "truer" socialist states in existence now are generally in Africa/The middle east To me democratic socialism is the balance.

1/3 That’s my preferred model, too, and I think it would be most people’s if they were informed. What bothers me about capitalist-bashing is that, in my view, it distracts from building that model. 'Capitalist rhetoric' - aspiration, hard work, enterprise - seems to appeals to many people...

2/3 ... but all of it is possible in a social democracy with free markets, strong regulation, socialised key industries, and excellent safety nets. In fact, social mobility is far more likely in such a society than in explotative economies like the US or the UK.

3/3 Often, the left highlights only the other side of the model, leaving the aspirational vision to the right, even though they oppose real competition, 'new money' etc. and just want to protect the status quo.

Agree, human necessities need control to keep them at an available price Historically science and technology only thrive with state funding so that's necessary a halfway house And luxuries and recreation are the places where capitalism really shines: food, drink, entertainment, home goods etc.

But the left really does have a communication issue as you say, because we don't differentiate between capitalism and the free market There's really strong appeal globally for democratic socialism, the messaging just needs to change with accurate wording critical to leaving aspiration open to folk
