Naive question: instead of establishing a new/sister conference - wouldn't it make sense to bump visibility of an existing format like e.g. ECML? Recordings could be provided for free to allow for content to be visible globally. One should even add a day or two of online only collaboration...

That would be nice, but I guess name recognition is easier to build starting from a giant event? All other things being equal, I also think we should break up NeurIPS thematically but that’s another issue

That's how you can guess my age: NIPS in my head always was more prestigious due to more math-y content, but otherwise similarly well known as ECML ;)

From my experience starting Berlin Buzzwords: one thing that's easier with a new name is building up your own format without influence from existing expectations. But that needs buy in from multiple influential ppl out of the community.
