Don't think there is much blackmail involved. Trump adores Putin, just look how happy he is with him, and aims to be like him. A dictator who can plunder his country, enrich his friend beyond belief, and kill his enemies without consequences.

Honestly, I think this has been in the works for a long time. If you think about it, he’s been caught in the middle of a lot of Russian mobster stuff. Lots of money laundering, sex trafficking, and people from that part of the world sought by Interpol have been found living in Trump Tower.

The sheer fact that Trump has adored/idolized Putin for 20+ years. Trump knows that the US won't tolerate his simply handing over Ukraine to Putin, and that's what Putin is demanding that he do.
