Border controls are fundamentally un-American, though! The whole idea of the US is that the circumstances of your birth *should not matter,* that the law should not recognize categories of people distinguished by nothing but accident of birth. But immigration controls do exactly that.
Clear boundaries make for good relationships. A lack of boundaries makes for toxic relationships. The problem with US immigration law is that it purposefully blurs boundaries to allow what we say is unallowable, so that we can benefit from what we claim to oppose.
In the 1830's if a person was born to a slave they were a slave. The importation of slaves was illegal at that time, and that was a form of border controls enshrined in the Constitution.
The founders built the country on the idea that "the circumstances of your birth *should not matter*" and that is why they put in the Constitution a requirement that a president be a natural born citizen. After all everyone knows that being born in the US has nothing to do with an accident.
There is "the way you think it should be." There is "the way it actually is." Vastly different worlds and only one of them is the reality of now.

No, that’s not what that means. It means that if you’re born into a family without a penny, with a skin color that isn’t white or with an illness or disability or any other circumstance not of your making or choice, this country is supposed to give you the chance to rise.
