I have done a very small amount of efficiency consulting, and can confirm that many in the space are selling utter bullshit ideas with no data to back them up. When anyone says empathy is a weakness in business leadership, you know they are an idiot.

I won't ever understand how putting the work of two people onto one is more efficient. Work can get done faster with more people helping.

The idea is the consultant identifies the inefficiencies in process that reduce the workload, so you don’t *need* two people. But… they rarely do, and management cut anyway. The inefficiencies are usually things management loves, like petty bureaucracy and metrification.

One less person to pay, one persons workload on another. Pay half, get double work (Repeat until you start having controversies or get in legal trouble)

And even then you should consider what level of controversy and legal trouble is still acceptable. After all, a small fine is just a business expense.

And if you DO get in trouble, try getting a scapegoat or burying it! Just sweep it under the rug, its probably fine.

But then they have to pay two salaries and thats the only kind of efficiency businesses care about

These days, someone who’s actually trained in efficiency and quality would probably tell you to keep the workload distributed so you don’t form a bottleneck waiting for one guy to get around to a bunch of things.
