The weirdest hangup my mum has is she hates when people say “yeah” instead of “yes” She literally will correct me or my sister when we say it. We’ll say yeah and she’ll snap back “sssss!” like she’s an upset snake. And yet asking her to respect pronouns is apparently absurd.

That's pretty innane ngl. Respecting dialects and slang is not hard. Yeah has been a word for decades

And as a kid I was under the impression I was genuinely doing something wrong every time I said it, because of this.

The problem with correct English is that while one can respect your use of your chosen pronouns a third person will always refer to you by name or as they and you.

in a previous role I was reprimanded for saying yeah rather than yes. Like lady we’re in Ohio. “Yeah no” is its own verbiage and i guarantee you a donor would not be able to say whether I said yes or yeah. They would just know I said something affirmative. Micro managing and controlling

I'm not allowed to say she or her when it comes to referring my mom in conversation. Ex: it's her fault, she told me, etc. No, that's bad according to her. I can only refer to her as mom or momma. Ex: Momma told me, mom said this, etc. Same with dad. Using correct pronouns is taboo in their house.

I'd double down and say it like Lil Jon just to piss her off. Then again, my mother is in prison for being a drug mule and a whore, and I haven't spoken to her in nearly a decade.

Did she watch Miss Congeniality at a formative age? This is a thing Michael Caine makes a big deal out of while he's teaching Sandra Bullock pageant etiquette.

Its unfortunate but not absurd as her proven rigid adherence to language is severely ingrained and making uncommon/unconventional usage of pronouns is going to hit against those same stubborn behaviors that she needs to find the motivation AND strength to overcome.
