The racism I encountered when we were stationed there was repulsive. The realtor drove my husband around town and pointed to a shopping center and said “That’s the dirty n****r store” and pointed to the Piggly Wiggly. We couldn’t believe how easily it rolled off her tongue!

That's really despicable. We have got to stop letting people get away with that hateful crap. 🤬

I grew up in a small town in Louisiana. A couple of years ago visiting my brother who still lives there I stopped to chat with the sweet old church lady who lives a couple of houses down. I used to mow her yard. As we chatted, she said, “Thank the Lord n*****s still haven’t moved to our street.” Oof

It really is ingrained into their culture.

I would have excoriated her. It’s not enough to not be racist, you have to stand up to the racists and let them know that’s fucked. I do not care what they think of me.

Yeah, we asked her what on gods green earth thought we would be ok with that, and said we were done.

Similar thing happened when I bought my first home in Texas. I didn’t find out about this realtor’s racism until just before closing.

It’s sad that we have to do this now… we fully research everyone for anything, including restaurants, projects, realtors… everything. “Can’t shake the devils hand and say you’re only kidding.” - TMBG

Similar experience in Boone, North Carolina in 2017, but without the obvious racial slurs. More along the lines of "Well, you COULD live in this neighborhood, but most people choose not to."

Yeah - the wording was very careful (still is) and nuanced. It happens in the northern states as well, alas. My uncle was told "Oh, that area has no sidewalks, if you like walking we can try over here" and shown housing in white neighborhoods. He went through 4 realtors before he bought a house.

These places will never change! The more you force racial equality the more they will dig their talons in and the higher they will wave their bibles.

My experience has been the bible-wavers are louder and more overt, but the racism exists everywhere. The more subtle form is "Give it time dear, make sure he can support you and your children first." Or "Don't just settle for pretty, intelligent & a lot of fun, would she make a good wife/mother?"

I hope you reported them. People can Google for the best links applicable to their situation. That's awful. 🤬

That was 20 years ago, we gave her a piece of our mind and dumped her. I’d like to think it has gotten better, and maybe it has…but honestly, it was part of the culture at the time. We hated it so much he got out of the service and we moved away after a year.

Yeah, even then we were under federal obligations to comply with certain conduct rules and that was pretty egregious. 💔 I was briefly a realtor in Atlanta in the late 90s and it was literally part of our training that we could be "tested" by couples to check our biases at any time.

My wife and I went to Disneyworld in February 2022. We left early. This older couple sat next to us on a bench. They were from New Orleans, I've been there but didn't like it, and they said, "It's because the blacks" absolutely disgusting. The Confederacy is the biggest thorn in America's side.

We were stationed in New Orleans….yup! That’s pretty much the attitude there.

The Confederacy has to be the most racist part of the world. I will never step foot in any of it ever again. I'm in the middle of reading The 1619 Project, and you can draw a straight line from the first 30 slaves being dropped off in Virginia to what's happening today.
