Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash both cover it. Interesting sidebar is that while Earle has for decades been an outspoken leftist and pro gun control, he was apparently a huge gun enthusiast when he wrote the song, which is difficult to read as being anything but anti gun.
Not to go off about it but it’s one of my favorite songs and I think all that stuff is interesting as far as art meaning intentionality interpretation etcetera go.
