I spent a few years overseas in the 70s. While they admired many things the US had accomplished, the overall opinion was that Americans were boorish, arrogant and conceited; they had an overblown sense of their own importance and looked down on the people of other countries. I'd have to agree.

I remember what my friends who came back from Vietnam told me.. stay away from Americans, they believe their own press only to die marching through the jungle with ghetto blasters blaring. Americans have always been warm & welcoming whenever I’ve visited, they seem completely different to the ones you meet while travelling overseas. It’s a very strange experience meeting them at home, not at all what I expected.

When I first started traveling, I was absolutely stunned. I had grown up listening to the "we're the biggest, baddest and the best" propaganda and quickly realized we were way behind most other developed countries... we are still lagging way behind Europe with their great high speed rail system.

When traveling I never share that I’m American. IRL I’ve witnessed so many ignorant, self-consumed Americans, even in my own former friend groups. In college I stuck with the foreigners as I did not trust Americans.
