Honestly, I think many people (who are not typically the oppressed) need to believe that someone out there will “do the right thing”—that law enforcement is honorable and here to protect us. So they create stories to avoid facing a truth they don’t want to see.

I could imagine there is a deeper thing where understanding that this is just cops would challenge their understanding of themselves and their place in society. The harder it is to accept that these are just cops, the more you've you've been the beneficiary of cops.
