The kids apparently arrived in the U.S. unaccompanied. Their parents might be alive in Guatemala, or possibly have been killed by gang violence or in some natural disaster. I have read that some parents have even sent their kids to el Norte when they couldn’t afford to feed the family. 1/

Guatemala is stepping up by offering housing and assistance to the returnees who are children. Many are orphans and have no obvious person who has legal responsibility for them in Guatemala. Others may have family but fled Guatemala because of abuse. It all has to be sorted out.

I did see an article that stated that the government of Guatemala was ready and willing to accept the children; but hard to say what might happen after that. If they’re unable to find the families, their care resources may be insufficient to support many of them. It’s not a wealthy country.
