yeah I think the enshittification of the old mass-platformers is a kind of collapse of the tower of babel/fall of Rome moment: no one will ever have those first mover advantages, and hence that size, and hence those network effects ever again.

The socials, long divided, must unite; long united, must divide. Thus it has ever been. Unity succeeds division and division follows unity. One is bound to be replaced by the other after a long span of time.
TikTok? YouTube? Idgi
I'm very hopeful that will mean we are free from the current oligopoly of fringe lunatics.
This was the Facebook discourse a decade ago.
also imo this is very good, twitter was ass and had a huge nazi problem even back in the old jack days, and in my view stifled left wing discourses at a critical moment in history
TikTok did grow despite not having first mover advantage but it also exploded 7 years ago and was pioneering a new medium of short form video
That’s probably fine, massive social networks have done more harm than good.
Maybe yes, maybe no? FB managed to achieve dominance without being a first mover (there was MySpace, LiveJournal etc. before them). We'll have to wait and see what happens. Although I don't expect Bsky to emerge dominant over X, because of identity politics creating barriers to joining.
