It might help if we had more stories where the protagonist genuinely is trying to do good in the best possible way, but the system is so messed up that there is no good option. There are some, but not enough. Usually the hero's conflict is something hindering them from doing The Right Thing.
I think Do The Right Thing, ironically, is an excellent example of a well-meaning character butting up against an intractably broken system.
The movie literally spells it out. "They are rich but they're still nice." "They are nice because they are rich [...] If I had this kind of money, I'd be nice too!"
