The TL/DR is that he had some remaining coursework which he planned to complete at Stanford, but he didn't attend Stanford (rendering him as having overstayed his educational visa), but 2 years later UPenn changed the degree requirements and the additional courses were no longer needed.

Note that he doesn't have a BS in Physics - he has a BA in Physics. But then again, so did Stephen Hawking. 🤷‍♀️ Doesn't really mean much.
