Two things I constantly heard growing up (and still would if I were in contact with those who would say them): You’re too smart to believe that liberal shit. Just wait, you’ll get conservative as you get older.

My Uncle said that crap to me in front of his damn Confederate shrine at his house along with, "You either vote Republican or don't vote at all." Haven't talked to him in 25 years and could honestly care less to ever again.
The more conservative the older you get is so far from reality for me it's hilarious. I went from a pretty conservative young man to a radicalized old man.
I was literally thinking of this yesterday as I've realized those statements are just a projection of those folks trying to rationalize their own discomfort with their internalized racism/misogyny/etc.
My experience with aging has turned me from a Reagan Seems Cool child to a Yay Democrats Liberal young adult to a Total Fucking Socialist middle-aged man. Fully expecting my Maoist turn to come in about ten years or so. If I live to 90, best believe I’ma be rockin the Lenin bald head and goatee.
Had this discussion with my wife about this about a week ago As I get older I see more people cling to the comfort of what they know, the fear of losing it, and everything they don’t like or know is a threat to that. That’s what this bullshit is.
Me, always a liberal but only going farther left as I age
I'm 57, and I'm further left than I was at 27.
Turns out those people all sucked.
Took me far too long to realize it in full.
I always had my suspicions, but the shreds of doubt often kept me from going ham on em. No more.
