friend of mine tore a ligament in practice, not in the show, but he was out for months after. there's often a lot going on.
Was ASM for a show and in rehearsal a dancer fell and broke their wrist. Required surgery, but still made being in the show. By the time we closed, it didn't even make the top 3 of "well that happened" moments.
his was a knee in a role that required moving around stage a lot
It's what gave us Shirley Maclaine, isn't it? Sure, she probably would have become a star one way or another eventually, but going on for Carol Haney in the Pajama Game definitely jump-started her career.
I mean, I don't even want to show you the links, they're so rage-inducing.
ffs
I *have* to ask, Bebe -- do you have any "the star broke her ankle' understudy stories?
Yes. (No broken bones. But I’ve seen a thing or two in my years.)
It'd be kinda fun if an audience member were selected at random to fill in. Not for anyone there, of course. They bought a ticket. For me. For us. Watching it later online for free while eating Doritos.
Did you ever see stage show “Point Break: Live”? It’s the one where the person playing Keanu’s character is chosen from the audience, selected by popular vote, and reads the part from cue cards. www.pointbreaklive.com
That sounds like fun!
What if that audience member is @bebeneuwirth.bsky.social and they have to select her no matter what the part?
let a person take a personal day sometimes, sheesh.
