There's long been a distrust of "fancy" food by many people in the UK (one of the reasons British food has a bad rep), in the 90s it was columnists/comedians moaning about sundried tomatoes and so on, this feels like an extension of that, coupled with a bit of the "anti-elites" culture war stuff

Oh yeah there's no logic as to what is and isn't "fancy", basically anything out of the ordinary seems to frighten/upset/annoy some people.
