Ukraine would be open to withdrawing from Donetsk region in exchange for a full Russian withdrawal from Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, WSJ claims. This information is unconfirmed and not in line with recent statements by Zelensky, who said Ukraine would not cede territory.

This would bear at least some advantage for Ukraine in terms of territory, but I'm sure Putin would never agree, because this way russia would lose the land bridge to Crimea. So maybe offering this could be a smart move at some point, to show that russia is unwilling to make real concessions.

Actually, nice offer by Zelensky. Will never happen, of course. Putin wants to go all the way to Moldova and Romania. And, of course, there's the water supply issue for Crimea. But the offer makes Zelensky look like a negotiator and Trump will like this.

Putin is unlikely to agree to fully withdraw from Kherson because that would sever his critical land bridge to Crimea and threaten the supply of freshwater. Likewise Zaporizhzhia, because he wants the Zaporizhzhia NPP to supply power to Crimea.

Only to stop the slaughter, I would offer Ukraine everything but Donetsk and Luhansk, and make those neutral, with a UN protectorate for 5 years, after which a free, outside-observed election is held to decide a final outcome.

2. Option A. Trump is meeting with Putin so he can get a fresh set of instructions on two issues: how to prolong the war in Ukraine while still looking tough on Russia. And further advice on how to end US democracy. Option B. More useful deflection from the Epstein affair. And all three may apply.

1. Given the reporting we've now had on the "misunderstanding" that Steve "Witless" conveyed to Trump about what Putin was offering (which was: nothing new), it'd seem 100% certain no deal can be done. So the question is, why the meeting? Two scenarios - not mutually exclusive (see next comment)...

This is so dumb. Feels like the US officials are spreading misinformation on purpose just to get Putin out of russia to Alaska so they can assassinate him properly, but that kind of scenario would be way too optimistic to be real. It’s all just a waste of time as usual.

Realistically, I think, for Ukraine the challenge is to make sure that Trump doesn’t blame them for “collapse” of negotiations. So play a hardline in public whilst offering “reasonable” compromises that they know there is no way that Russia will sign up to.

This is why real negotiations need to happen behind closed doors so that negotiators can talk about radical proposals without people and politicians sabotaging things. This is absolutely a non-starter, but negotiators still need to be able to talk about it.
