On the contrary, I think some of the youth understand more than John Roberts would like.
On the contrary, I think some of the youth understand more than John Roberts would like.
He’s going to say Trump has a mandate next.
Roberts really has no sense of how history is going to perceive him, does he? He actually believes he’s a hero in this story.
Because he thinks he just that special. He is horrifying.
John Roberts is oblivious. Roberts champions “Justice Marshall,” not realizing that most of us are thinking is he talking about “Thurgood Marshall!?!” 😯 John Marshall was born in 1755. Andrew Jackson replaced Marshall with “Dred Scott” Author Roger Taney.
Roberts is a champion for graft and corruption, whether it be within SCOTUS or the White House, Big money talks and immunity is a mere gavel away if you can afford it!! So, teach your children well!!
Well, since it's the Rethugs who have removed Civics, and Social Studies, and Humanities, and Critical Thinking from the curriculum, what the hell does he expect!
So, just a thought, give them a good example.
Really? Those of us who know how it works are horrified and furious.
Maybe the Federalist Society could do some sort of educational outreach program.
Yea, at this point, the Roberts court is so ass-backwards, I don't even think he knows what the law is or how the justice system works. Hard to listen to a guy who blew up the Constitution in Trump v US.
John Roberts and Samuel Alito were terrible long before they began their gay love affair as SCOTUS
Maybe he’s right, but I also think a lot of people believe that the rule of law is a sham designed to protect corporations and the wealthy, and thus have no problem with Trump burning it down.
Trump is the clearest example of the law being a sham used to protect the rich and powerful
He’s lucky more people don’t understand how the legal system is supposed to work because then they’d be angrier when they see how he’s failing it.
There has never been a wormier politician masquerading as a chief justice than John Roberts.
They keep pissing on us and expecting us to celebrate the rain
Really rich coming from his court.
I think people see what the Supreme Court does and extrapolate that the rot is flowing downwards.
JFC, he’s one to talk. 🙄😡
Roberts’ kids will be embarrassed to carry his name. He created this monster. He should STFU if he isn’t going to stop Trump. Civics classes are responsible for his batshit awful rulings? Spare me.
He created all of this and then has the nerve to blame education. Fuck that ivory-towered asshole.
I think Chief Justice Roberts may have missed those classes too.
I, along with many Americans, have enough of a civics education to know giving the President near complete immunity was a bunch of bullshit.
Just unbelievable, the irony.
Young people 100% have a good idea of how our system of justice works. You buy judges and then they dismantle the country in order to increase your wealth from 10 billion to 10.00000000000000000001 billion. Worth it.
As a retired teacher, I have seen the decline in our children’s education in terms of democracy and our country’s history.
Roberts should have learned long ago that humans learn by example. He has *not* taught our children well.
The guy is just so out of touch. With reality. And everything else…
"no real sense of how our justice system works"? Oh, I think we're getting a pretty clear sense 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰
Says the guy who put the office of the president above the law
These students know that the judiciary is taking away their civil rights, their bodily autonomy and the right to vote. They know the court is eroding it's own power, and that of the legislative branch. Students have little faith in the old fucks like him who are trashing the world around us.
While, he’s making some good points about education in general, right now our system of justice does NOT work. It takes too long, its leaders are too timid, and they are too reluctant to use their contempt power to its logical conclusion. If you can’t use the fed marshals, hire the fired FBI agents.
The chief justice made his bed, now he gets to lay in it. His legacy is complete. It will live in the annals of authoritarian history
says the sitting judge who has selective amnesia about the Constitution, especially that whole separation of church and state thing…
As our Supreme Court is ground zero for accepting money and favors from oligarchs, I'm pretty sure our young folks are getting a clear picture of how our legal system works. The rich and powerful own it. Period. Full stop. Equality under the law is myth. That nobody is above the law...a bad joke.
Oh I think young people are getting a very clear idea of how the US system of justice works. If you're rich and white you can get away with almost anything and if you're Trump you can get also get away with insurrection, theft of top secret national security documents, and uprecedented corruption.
JFC. Kids today may not get much civics education, but they know a gritty and a con job. Any belief in justice and democracy was betrayed by SCOTUS already.
John Roberts, who adopted his children— thinks we poor working schlubs should “have children to balance our work life.” Just imagine the private nannies, tutors, schools, and expensive summer camps the Roberts’ kids have had the privilege of enjoying in life.
Highly recommend 5-4 podcast for those interested in how fucked the court has been for some time, but how much more partisan hackery there is now compared to prior generations. Obvs im not trying to downplay Plessy v.Ferguson or anything, but that was outright racism. This is more insidious bullshit
Did he deliver this in a hotdog suit
He may be right. Our social studies teacher in HS arranged for us to take a field trip to court to hear a trial. I'll bet not many schools do things like that today.
His Court, his legacy….and ultimately his shame.
It makes more sense when you realize someone like Chief Justice Roberts puts the pretend laws of a fake entity that people came up with because they were afraid of death just ahead of the laws established by our founding fathers and the generations that followed them and who molded this country
I'm guessing he had a liquid lunch with Kavanaugh beforehand?
Yes, of course, blame the teachers. Keep in mind that teachers don’t get to choose the curriculum. The blame lies with the Supreme Court. They have given tacit approval to whatever the felon wanted. Now he’s pushing them into a corner. Do they uphold the Constitution? Let’s hope they do. 🤞🏻
My former fourth graders had a clearer grasp of the 3 branches of government, checks and balances, and the role of the Supreme Court than these corrupt judicial clowns!
Roberts can fuck off and then fuck off some more. He is the reason we're in this mess, him and his *rule for ages* granting felon 47 kingship.
Judicial ethics 🙃
I think he and his colleagues have done a great job of educating the public that Supreme Court Justices aren't neutral arbiters of law but rather politicians in robes
A system that he has benefited by and takes advantage of to pass corrupt judicial opinions and allow corrupt justices to sit on his court. Pearl-clutching that no one knows civics while using that ignorance to benefit the man who’s ass he kisses
Well, Chief Justice Roberts, some have been saying that for YEARS. Why is KS messing with the AP US History course & FL banning AP African American studies? Subjects such as these foster civic engagement. Civics class should show kids how our government works and encourage them to participate.
Great idea, they might wanna re-educate themselves too.
“…having no real sense about how our system of justice works.” Oh, I can answer that: IT DOESN’T!
The good news is that a whole group of young people is growing up with a crystal clear understanding of how the Supreme Court works: corruptly, arrogantly, and abjectly in service to the oligarchs.
We are not blind, we are not ignorant
Yeah, I think a whole lot of people have a pretty good idea how our justice system works: no or minimal consequences for rich, powerful people, detention/ debt/ theft/ murder for everyone else. And we know that because we saw a black man murdered by a cop, while Trump initiated a coup and walked.
Seems like Robert himself is having trouble getting a sense of the law
when will Roberts acknowledge that all Trump's law breaking stems from his immunity decision- probably never.
Roberts blames "schools"! Trump's entire governing philosophy (if you can call it that) is loyalty over competence, lawlessness over ethics. Roberts rewarded that.
Yes, Roberts did exactly that!
How insulting. Way to blame the victims. This is a level of gaslighting. I think the youth knows what habeas corpus is, a warrant, and that “officers” should identify themselves and not wear masks. And that’s where we’re at so….yeah, lead by an ethical example, Roberts.
I know how our justice system works. It's expensive.
We all have an understanding of how it has always worked, we see it in the news. Oj got off, the cops who kill get off, the rich get off and the poor people don't.
LMAO
"how our system of justice works" has been displaced in importance by "for whom our system of justice works"
20% of americans can't read.
So Roberts blamed the schools for not teaching Civics? Most “A “ students managed to learn Civics with general knowledge. But seriously, here & now, We have a Big Ass problem & griping about Trump supporters thinking Trump doesn’t need to know it is worthless argument. SCOTUS is the hot spot !
“Bribery” is a fairly easy concept for a college student to grasp.
I beg to differ with him. The people growing up now are profoundly aware that our court systems work at the behest of the richest and most powerful members of our society.
Mr.Chief Justice, how do you teach young people about Constitutional “checks and balances” when you dismantled them with the spurious and a-historical reasoning that provided Trump with carte blanche that’s blessed by an obsequious GOP congress?
Dear Mr Chief Justice: Youre blaming young people for today’s problem of not understanding civics, democracy or our form of government? Fool - look around you & be sure to look in the mirror. Tell me what age you see.
In my opinion, "only around 5% of convictions come from juries, the rest come from coercive plea deals" is the kind of knowledge that would radically change people's opinions of the American legal system, if they knew about it.
The role of courts? To screw the poor people and let the rich people skate! Teach that in schools.
The U.S. system of justice doesn’t work, it’s been broken by people like Roberts.
these poor students won't even be prepared to shop for an RV for the judge
We should be reposting this every day.
“We’re developing a situation where a whole group of young people is growing up having no real sense about how our system of justice works.” We can all plainly see how it really works.
They are growing up seeing with their own eyes that our justice system does not work.
Wow, no words, talk about living in a bubble, the total lack of self awareness is well...unfortunate for democracy. Just wow.
He can go fuck himself
So ignorance of the law is a slam-dunk defence now? 🤦♂️
"A whole group of young people?" How about the current President, his cabinet and all of his ReTrumplican followers have absolutely no idea how the United States Government is supposed to work! The checks and balances of the 3 equal branches...
Didn't we already determine that ethics don't apply to the Supreme Court?
Yeah, and granting immunity to a felon ain’t such a good idea either.
The justice system clearly doesn’t work.
Our system of justice is wholly broken. Why would anyone have a good sense of what an effective system of justice does?
SCOTUS: Judicial ethics for thee, Harlan Crow for me.
He's bound by judicial ethics? What did I miss?
Every time he opens his mouth the hot dog suit meme just rolls out
tRumpf doesn't know anything about government, why would anyone else? As a teacher, it's not because they weren't taught, it's because they chose not to listen and study in high school.
I'm pretty sure recent history has shown that judicial ethics only apply if the GOP feels like it.
Of course he left out the part of how the highest court keeps flip flopping and the American people are losing faith in them steadily.
He's blaming the victim. It's the public's fault for not being educated rather than our leaders collective fault for not defending the Constitution.
Infuriating traitor.
That's because it hasn't been.
Gives himself a pass, doesn't he.
“A corrupt judiciary is hardly likely to hold a corrupt executive to account”. - Prashant Bhushan
It must've started long ago to have reached supreme Court justices who don't know how the constitution works.
Our system of justice works like this because of John Roberts: the Supreme Court makes up facts and law to get to the decisions it wants.
Roberts is the one forcing our government into failure. By unnecessary and frivolous delays on rulings then deciding Trump is immune from prosecution, in absolute opposition to the Constitution, Roberts has made it clear he hates our government. So exactly what is it he wants children to be taught?
I assumed he was talking about DOJ leadership…
It’s sad that so many Americans have grown up thinking that they live in a democracy where the rule of law is paramount. How disappointing when it turns out that their democracy was a very thin veneer over an oligarchy where only money matters.
Talk about tone deaf and willful blindness (and I mean that term in the legal sense).
John Roberts could hold a series of "Civics 101" lectures this summer if he, you know, really cared about this.
Roberts is accurate and at the same time clueless. It’s the kind of clueless thinking that fails to recognize his own responsibility in destroying norms. It’s to be expected (I suppose) of one who lives a life of sheltered privilege.
"Do you worry that Trump isn't complying with court orders?" "Kids these days don't understand the law!" What a dismissive, non sequitur response.
"Listen, kid. We have preferred outcomes in mind. Hearings are just us working backwards to justify it."
It may be true that young people don’t understand how the justice system works due to lack of civics education, but what is Trump’s excuse?
Maybe they're confused because the judicial system regarding Trump isn't working?
That’s BS. Civics Education is required in most states. In some states, it’s a graduation requirement.
I guess the good news is that we won’t have to worry about it much longer
No shit. Roberts lecturing on civics. Does he think Thomas and alito knowing civics and "how things work" have made for a better judiciary? Maybe he should push Ethics harder.
Meanwhile the Supreme Court accepts bribes. But I don't understand civics?
