She was therefore threatening to them, because she authentically spoke for the same people they (erroneously) claim to speak for and could not be dismissed as a liberal elite- their favoured tactic with anyone they don’t like.

She should be held up as a great British success instead they attacked her at every opportunity. If she had been American she would have been lauded.
Given Reform’s rise I’d question how authentic her voice of the working class was. The working class is now seemingly “best” represented by posh racists ie Powell Johnson and Farage. Most seem happy to throw their lot in with those people rather than any who want to improve their lives.
She spent most of the past year holding on to Labour's RW party lines 🤷🏼♀️ This week alone we've had a whole bunch of RW culture war bs coming from the cabinet, and she spoke up for none of their targets. They hate her for being Labour as to the RW, Labour is always LW, even when they go hard right.
And YET despite that authenticity these very same people she actually did speak for have turned on her if vox pops are to be believed - and not because of some heightened moral standing but because of envy and bloodlust and because they are drunk on the prejuduice and fantasies of Reform.
As soon as the media caught wind of the story they've been after her, and have made her front page news every step of the way. Not sure who they're next target will be now they've succeeded, probably Reeves, but they will have another target in mind.
She’s therefore been the subject to endless snobbery and classism and extra scrutiny from day 1- another reason she was foolish not to be meticulous.
It's a sad reflection that even Sir Magnus was hinting in his letter that these were the rules you signed up to (but the Tory government didn't). Live by the sword die by the sword.

Reform/Tory politicians will never be held to the same scrutiny as other parties - it's not an even playing field. The class system in this country is appalling and awesome, working class women working for equality, are perceived as a threat and must be taken down by any means.
She will be a massive loss to the party and to ordinary people in the country who she did huge amounts in that first year. The right wing press have got her scalp after years of trying.
What about Farage's Mortgage arrangements
RW stochastic terrorism "they only have to get lucky once"
Yes, she should have been more alert. They tried to nobble her in 2024 with some confected BS and failed. But they were never going to stop there, for all the reasons you list. So frustrating. bsky.app/profile/paul...
How many conservative MPs would be sitting in jail?
Sad to see her go but good Rayner has shown she has integrity & resigned. Pity Johnson, Sunak, Zahawi etc etc didn't also have the same integrity. Oh and that woman who crashed the UK economy.. Plus the guy who lobbied Congress against the UK this week. Didn't see the media circus questioning him.
The lack of coverage on C4, BBC and Sky of Congressman Jamie Raskin holding Farage's hypocritical feet to the fire is bloody infuriating.
Surely there is a genuine possibility that he has broken the law by working against the country. He is elected to serve. I keep hoping Ed Davey might say something about it, he hasn’t been slowing criticizing Farage.

I've no idea what the laws are regarding treason but judging by the comments of those who know their political history, his actions are pretty much unprecedented. Certainly, for a sitting MP. Not to mention the leader of a political party.
I don’t think I’ve discounted somebody actually complaining. I just think they would want the evidence maybe first. You need to double check what it was that he said under oath and then have the evidence of the journalists that he banned, and then of course his threat of tariffs
It certainly is infuriating. BBC showed a short carefully edited extract so viewers received a distorted report of his bluster and being ahem, economical with the truth under oath at Congress.
Inexplicably, Channel 4 news did the same. ☹️
Yes I’m disappointed in Ch4. They’re usually in-depth with their questioning but for some reason they’re giving Farage an easy ride.
And also misogyny. The combination really poisoned some people's minds.
When I often talk about US politics, when female politicians of a certain political persuasion are brought up, I always see them described as "that woman." See also Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris.
Exactly this.
💯 this. Put far more eloquently than I could manage.
Agree with you completely but in the end she was brought down by her own greed. But while she remains an MP, and if enough time passes between now and Starmer resigning/being forced out, I still think she's favourite to be next Labour leader.
I thought AR was fabulous and I think the resignation was a mistake. I loved to watch the posh boys squirm when faced with a fiesty working class woman. She was proper Labour.
100% on this Lewis and Labour generally. What I cannot understand is why she just did not pay full stamp duty and take no chances. She was on a Cabinet salary of £140k, expenses on top and will never need to look for another job given her connections/profile.
You’re assuming she tried to avoid tax. Maybe it was an honest mistake?
Well, we can only hope that Tory and Reform MPs will be held to the same scrutiny and act accordingly. Not something they have ever done in the past!
Very true Lewis. I feel sorry for Rayner but it was naive to imagine the press wouldn’t uncover the issues surrounding the purchase of the Brighton flat.
What utter tripe. Not a single member of the last government would have resigned over this.
The difference is the member of the last govt wouldn’t have had such a level of attack from the media. The media have been salivating over this. Different treatment for Zahawi and Hunt methinks.
One has to work twice as hard when coming from a subordinate or marginalised position.
I hope she gets advice from Mandelson on speedy return route
I've annoyed some mates by saying similar. She was careless and I can't for the life of me understand why as an experienced politician she let that happen. A little hubristic maybe?
How about she did what most buyers would have done in the same circumstance?
True but most buyers are not relentlessly critiqued by a right wing press. She did make a mistake but in politics that's not allowed...
Spot on! The lack of rigour is baffling
Very true. The media landscape we inhabit means any big complex purchase or investment she would ever make would have to be absolutely meticulous. Why doesn't the Labour party have a legal and compliance officer that can help with these things for their senior politicians?
It's incredible to me that she wasn't more careful with her financial affairs precisely because of that heightened scrutiny.
