pretty incredible indictment of NYT’s news judgement that Wyden just comes out and says the real news, while the NYT story is framed all about the posturing and buries the lede

And the Democrats shouldn’t let go of the Epstein case.
NYT racking up indictments faster than Trump himself
Holy shit!
ALFA Bank, follow the money : www.newyorker.com/news/news-de... krebsonsecurity.com/2021/09/laws...
It's almost like the people (money?) that control what the NY Times publishes don't want the Epstein information to be made public.
Might also be A-B testing, though?
Donald Trump wants to hide the Epstein files because he’s surely implicated in them as a child trafficking predator. Others want this hidden more likely because Epstein was a key figure in international money laundering?
the headline frames him as a loony lefty
I wonder if people will be horribly disappointed if this is the thing they’re hiding. Not a tape with Trump on it but Trump protecting some rich guy. The MAGA who care about ‘the scandal’ probably won’t care about that. Anything complicated no matter how corrupt doesn’t interest them.
I think we're really in pretty unknown waters about how this will play out. On the one hand, this fits cleanly into a long line of conservative conspiracy theorizing (as Nicole Hemmer pointed out on @gregsargent.bsky.social 's Daily Blast). So I think they'll be inclined to push beyond just $ data.
On the other hand, I think Trump's unusually powerful in terms of his grip on Fox News and a lot of the conservative media sphere. Hard to tell if he can dampen things enough for us until things blow over.
On the (third?) hand, corruption is often a matter not of breaking the law or crossing a bright line, but of violating particular moral standards (is what I did bad *relative to those like me*?) But there are very few standards as widely shared as "exploiting young girls for sex is bad."
So it would really matter if it turns out to be *that* or something like it, and not just financial improprieties.
yeah that’s better, although the story still really winds its way to the money
Oh, yeah, but it is the NYT, after all...gotta be patient... 🙄
It happens to the best of them. WaPo is still hypothesizing why Maurene Comey was fired.
Exactly. To them the story is about a political fight over facts, not the facts themselves or what they might mean.
Christ… he’s doing the job the shitty NYT should be doing.
Whenever I see something like this, I always wonder how many members of The New York Times editorial board were on the material in Jeffrey Epstein safe. www.yahoo.com/gma/fbi-agen...
NYT and most mainstream media is trash.
HATE their headline. Unreal
If I were a hacker of some skill, I’d infiltrate NY ACS’ case management system and release any and all documents related to child welfare investigations into NYT execs. I bet you there’s some real juicy shit in there.
I can’t believe all those save the children MAGA\Q types have all of a sudden became fine with such heinous crimes… frozen basically… let it go, let it go… full Disney princess attitude towards something they said was so important for forever…
I feel like lots of news orgs and journalists are focused on the drama angle these days, rather than the underlying news itself. “Trump says evil people ask questions about flood warnings” rather than “flood warnings save lives elsewhere and it seems insufficient ones were issued in TX”
sweeney thesis remains undefeated
This is an average of about $230,000 per transaction, which I seriously doubt is the amount that went to young women in Belarus. They could have spent a little time on who got what, I'd have read it.
NYT acts like publicists for powerful sex pests.
Incredible choice of framing on the Times’ part
That’s a charitable interpretation
such sleaze
I'm noticing more and more that "news" articles seem to emphasize a partisan angle over the actual facts of the article. It does a huge disservice to the public. And stokes more partisanship, imo! Agree, @jayrosen.bsky.social ?
How many mainstream media moguls are on the Epstein client list?
"like many Republicans on the far right, Mr. Wyden..." smh okey dokey NYT
I was half-expecting the NYT to run a headline saying something like, "Why we don't need the Epstein files" or "It's time to move on from the Epstein case". "This guy keeps insisting on investigating the Epstein case, isn't that craaaaazy?" is close.
NYT has become a gossip rag, Teen Vogue is the paper of record, now
I would argue it is Teen Vogue that has done more hard hitting journalism in the last twenty years.
We agree
Epstein was too big to fail I guess.
it’s especially irksome because Goldstein’s reporting on Epstein has been great. and here’s a real revelation about what *specifically* Trump is hiding, and it gets buried in the story
I’m all for a proper forensic audit of the Epstein business & personal accounts. It’s going to take someone like David Cay Johnston to get to the heart of the matter. I wonder if Epstein was an extortionist in addition to his sexual predator behavior? #CriminalPredator
Of course he was. He laundered and extorted and laundered the extortion money. He probably traded access to to the rich and famous to the rich and not famous. He collected people. Some to legitimatize his wealth, standing, others to play with, supply him, and later extort.
Where else could he have piled up all that money?
Ninja-ed!
A-B testing to piss off everyone.
Not by much!
