you read Philip K Dick? he explores this in VALIS, The Empire Never Ended, following the thread from ancient Rome to the American Empire, where the Roman Empire lives again. it's a lot more but like psychedelic sci-fi. Blade Runner, Minority Report, Total Recall, all based on his writing.
