It was even lower under Biden. Chances are the current number is a lie based on all the companies laying off from tariff talk, and AI replacing people. Add in all the government jobs where workers were told to stay home on paid leave or put on Govt Severance, and those numbers aren’t reflective yet.

It wasn’t necessarily a bad number then, and it’s not necessarily a bad number now. Unemployment will not and should not ever reach zero. My question would be has there been a change in underemployment and has there been a change in the labor force.

The purpose of that comment wasn't to speculate whether or not 4.1% is a good or bad number, it was to point out the shameless Republican hypocrisy. They claimed it was a bad number when the democrats were in power but it's suddenly a good number now that Trump is in power.

Zero unemployment is absolutely achievable through a federal job guarantee program. It would set a floor for wages and benefits and eliminate an inhuman system that aims to control prices by unemploying people.

Did there is a federal job guarantee there is definitionally no involuntary unemployment. If you want a job you need only go to the locally administered, federally funded job guarantee office. If you do not go to the office or some other job, you do not wish to have paid employment. That’s math.

Our unemployment percentage doesn’t separate out “voluntary” from “involuntary” in part because those are deeply difficult distinctions. With both a federal jobs and a tight labor market generally, many people are unemployed because they are not just looking for a job, but instead a good job

At least all of the jobs guarantee programs I have seen are about offering a reasonable floor for jobs, but someone in the middle of their career often will want to look for a job far above that floor because it’s better for their career & long term finances.

No one actually gives a shit about employment what matters is income because that is how you actually buy the shit you need to survive. A UBI fulfills that requirement. You are just making excuses for false scarcity.

A UBI can't take the place of employment. It can make losing a job less catastrophic, but we will always need humans in the workforce.

UBI is a floor. Everyone with a UBI has an incentive to take a job to earn more than the UBI. There will still be people with jobs with UBI even as AI can do more. The spending of UBI even creates more jobs for people, because people will still want human-produced goods and services.

The basic reality is that we have become so productive that there is not enough real work to do at least not that the rich care about doing. They also made up fake factories. One "funny" story: In Ostrava, in northern Moravia (Czechoslovakia), there were two factories. One produced steel pipes, the other processed those new pipes (which couldn't find market) as scrap metal and sent the material back to be made into pipes again.

This is the exact reason zero unemployment is possible in the US and not the USSR. With sluggish productivity, the marginal value of employment goes down for each additional worker. High productivity means every work is valuable

Rednekulo @rednekulo.bsky.social

Trying to get to 100% employment was one of the reasons why the Soviet block failed, that is, why it has such low productivity. People focus on USSR, but the communists also took developed economies and ran them into the ground, e.g., Czechoslovakia.

They gave it away when they said "let people refinance their houses"...most finance companies charge exorbitant fees to do that and most times you end up paying MORE to the bank than if you'd just kept it the way it was.

Biden’s unemployment rate remained below 4% for 27 months, from February 2022 to April 2024, the longest stretch of sub-4% unemployment since the 1960s. Scott would never have given such a rosy assessment back then. He’s a total hack
