A friend of mine was a partner in a major local firm and on the committee for approving advances and she said she was astounded by how prominent lawyers lived beyond their means through ownership of property and luxury goods, and were consequently living paycheck to paycheck with no financial flex.

This wasn't even a response to litigation... it was an executive order, of questionable legality, that you would have thought a big law firm could effectively squash. Which makes you also wonder how much they would give up on a case because they can't trust their own knowledge of law.
