In the EU we have most of this incl. childcare but still the birth rate is falling, so a little more (immaterial?) explanation is needed. Perhaps the stressful life situation for many can be a contributing factor, as well as the concern for the future (climate change, unstable global situation).

It's time. It's incredibly hard to work full time and raise 1 child. Not the monetary cost, the time cost. I have to take time off work a lot for kid stuff. My work suffers. My boss knows that. That's 1 kid. I couldn't work with more kids. No way. It wouldn't be fair to the kids or my boss.

It’s expensive to have a child today. Back before the 80’s one parent could work while the other stayed home to care for the children. With stagnant wages for the working class that is no longer possible. Then when both parents work finding affordable childcare is damn near impossible.
