I'm old enough to remember that the TVA built a Pumped Storage Hydropower system that stored excess nuclear power. They'd pump water up to a reservoir during hours of low power usage, and then let it flow down through hydro plant when they needed the extra juice. Essentially a battery made of water.

Windmills and solar can be used during the day to pump water behind a dam, then use the water to provide hydropower at night. This is actually being done in real life.

Dams with reservoirs actually use surplus power at night to fill those reservoirs for producing electricity during the day.
