From memory, think it’s this one? ‘The Laughing Policeman’

Sphere Film tie in edition of ‘the Laughing Policeman’ aka ‘An Investigation of Murder’ by Sjowall & Wahloo features photo of Walter Matthau with a two handed grip on a snub nose .38 revolver.

Found another pair of paperback lurkers. ‘Coo Killer’ in green Penguin and ‘The Man Who Went Up In Smoke’ by Sjowall & Wahloo.

‘Cop Killer’ depicts a dead cops arms & pocket contents in a plastic evidence bag. ‘The Man Who Went Up In Smoke’ shows a burning newspaper.

When I was a kid, the Martin Beck books were so widely read and discussed by the adults around me that I knew the name Per Wahlöö better than Agatha Christie. And I had no idea there was a co-writer. No one mentioned her, ever.

I even read some of them, so you’d think I’d remember her name… but I must have just thought of them as the Per Wahlöö books my family liked so much.

Sjöwall & Wahlöö kick Christie's arse in every way; their characters are three-dimensional and the novels are pricklily political.

‘Baffling Nymphomaniacs’ sounds like the 3rd place group in a uni band comp from 1987.
