Because of the existential threat to Canada. If commerce ceases, the middle class become the poor and the poor become destitute.

I don’t agree. It’s just identity politics: a huge swathe of people identify as ‘middle class’, regardless of their economic situation. What you’re describing is already happening (as outlined in the piece). If food banks are grossly over-subscribed, then people are becoming “destitute”.
