Yes, he did some good stuff back then, before he decided his Presidential campaign would do better if he kicked trans people around.
Isn't California still defending trans people against Trump's assaults?
Well, yes, because Newsom signed stuff into law back before he turned on us. That's the thing about him. He's a weathervane. You can't trust any position he takes.
It was something he and Shawn Ryan agreed about on Ryan's podcast. www.erininthemorning.com/p/newsoms-bi...
I listened to that interview. He didn't take a position on children or age, just made that "tough" comment. He also said he doesn't take a back seat on equal rights to anybody and pointed to his record on LGBTQ+ as governor (laws, EOs, etc.). For sports he said the "fairness" thing Buttigieg did.
Most of the above isn't good but it isn't what it's been portrayed as either. You'd think he's Ron DeSantis on the issue from what people are saying.
That's where he's headed if he keeps going. And he shows no signs of slowing down; he keeps talking to right-wingers and adopting their positions. I'm worried if we nominate him we'll end up like the UK, where both major parties are transphobic. Fortunately we have other primary contenders.
If he does that he won't win the nomination. I have concerns about those statements. He will have to clarify them to win the nomination. But Pritzker is the only one I've seen stand strong. Shapiro dodged when he was asked about a trans sports bill. Buttigieg sounds like Newsom.
If Shapiro and Whitmer can't stand up to Trump when he is trying to be a dictator why would one think they would stand tall on something like trans sports given the polling? People are making assumptions in a void. All cards will be on the table in 2027.
It is indeed early. Which is why I'm tired of people on Bluesky acting like Newsom is already the nominee and yelling at me for "enabling Trump" when I criticize him.
I think the frustration comes from the fire directed at Newsom, who has emerged as the most visible Trump opponent, and not at the 20 other governors doing little or nothing not to mention Congress. If Jeffries and Schumer led there would be no void to fill for Newsom and Pritzker.
Newsom has made the choice to appear with right wing figures and attack trans rights. No one forced him. I'm not going to just look away and be thrown under the bus again because someone thinks a different message is more important.
You are different since you are affected. It's the random people. Their fire should be directed at the people sitting around as Trump builds an autocracy.
