When your timeline (feed) is full of negative stuff, and then suddenly there's puppies or something funny or something happy, that makes your timeline not so grim. So it's following accounts that bring joy and reduces negativity in your timeline. It "cleanses" your timeline of bad stuff.

It means just refreshing your timeline with new follows to change things up. I prefer having a 'working' timeline that'll feed me targeted info in my interests and thus keep my follow list short, usually less than 100. When I want to mix things up, Discover and Search are always just a click away. 🤷

That's... not correct. A timeline cleanse means viewing positive content in the midst of all the doomscrolling that we all do.
