What many don’t recognize is that it takes months to dismantle the foundations of a democracy, and generations to rebuild it. Too many people see this as a Trump problem, it will be fixed when he goes away.

The 50 percent tariff to Brazil for prosecuting Bolsonaro is, for me, the most telling part of it all. There’s really no such thing as making a binding deal with Trump. Every deal will last right up until he has a new demand for us. If we don’t comply? Tariffs again. This is the path to fealty.

Someone should tell Carney this. He seems to think that one relatively rational phone call means something. He keeps talking about the benefits of CUSMA (which are real, for now) and suggests that its renegotiation will happen and will be OK for Canada. Trump will kill CUSMA as soon as he can.
