Anytime I've asked both right wingers, or left wingers who a liberal is, nobody seems to be able to answer. Liberals are just boggeymen.

”People don't agree on the definition" is different than "nobody is able to answer". To the right, words dont mean anything. Liberals use the word "liberal" to mean "progressive". Leftists use this definition: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal...

Nah the issue is that the lay person doesn't know what ot means because they never learn the actual definition in reference to political science. Same reason why right wing numbskulls think CRT is being taught in public high schools. The right wing double speak is rampant.

It's so frustrating that so called "political pundits" don't actually bother clarifying the definition of terms.

The problem there is right wingers classify everyone left of them as a monolith so all liberals, leftists, socialists, progressives etc might as well be the same to them. Most Americans also don't know where the term comes from.

The term "liberal" comes from the political concept of "liberating" things by removing restrictions. Neoliberals are the dominant liberal representation in the US since around the late 1970s and are for "liberating the market" following the philosophy of the book "The Road to Serfdom."

At least this is my understanding of it. I highly recommend watching Tom Nichols's documentary Boomers which examines the political shift from the Baby Boomers to the current generations. It's only on Nebula though afaik.

Might be good to look up articles/video essays on the difference between liberal and neoliberal because those tend to get into the specifics. Best find some that cote their sources too in case you wanna check the POV being represented.
