I do not think they would ever be able to do so openly and be able to legitimize their power. It goes so far against the core of the American civic religion that even the military would revolt at such an action. No, they would still have to maintain at least the appearance of American democracy.
Do you mean to say that the generals Trump has been personally interviewing and refers to as “my generals” haven’t been specifically installed to be part of the coup? Why did Trump only mobilize national guard units from MAGA heavy states?
Trump is very skilled at maintaining the appearance that he is defending American democracy and its "sacred symbols" (e.g. the Constitution) from perceived intruders, thus he is seen as a sort of "Messiah" to his following. His legitimacy among Americans ultimately stems from that perception.
The legitimacy won’t be needed for long is what I’m saying. We are on the very edge of the complete collapse of republicanism (existence of legislative branch and electoral politics) in the United States. Billions and billions going into arming *identity police*, not the military.
By legitimacy, I don't necessarily mean popular approval, but the ability to maintain and enforce that power. Enforcement requires a degree of cooperation that seems unlikely in the American setting.
