Feeling reflective this past week because it was the fortieth anniversary of this flight though unfortunately not reflective enough to take the absolutely perfectly symbolic photo opportunity that presented itself while I was out with friends the night of for unrelated but timely reasons
As I've gotten older my relationship with the ideal and reality of Canadian multiculturalism and welcoming tolerance of all manner of newcomers has grown more nuanced for all the usual reasons we don't need to elaborate on here
but for all that I've seen the flaws in how it's been implemented and the cracks in that consensus of late, I've never lost sight of the core fact that there are very few other places in the world where I could have started out where I did and still ended up where I am

We have not fully accomplished the ideal but what we have accomplished is worth defending AND perfecting, and whatever my next forty years here look like I want to help do that, even if just through my voice and my example and trying to keep the ladder hanging down behind me
