I would hate him too if I were Chilean. But isn't it true that some people still think he was a great leader. I've been reading a lot of books about Chile in preparation for a trip there.

There's a lot of people who still supports Trump too. The thing is, the previous government to the dictatorship was a socialist one, and the people with power made everything they could to savotage it, so the general masses could grow angry to the left.

The positive feeling towards Pinochet is merely emotional. When you really look into what happened there, they didn't make any favors to Chile. They erased culture, they rebuild the economic structure to enrich the richs and enpoor the poors (hence why so many wealthy people still likes him),

they ruined the public health systems (to the point where only now we have a current president, Boric, who at last made improvements to those), and a lot more that gets clear when you really dig in. The thing is, many people is scared of the left here because during Allende's government (+)

things were not great... Both because of extreme socialist meassures and because of the boycots by the powerful. People still fear that the same thing could happen if the left is on power, which is kinda dumb honestly. The last right wing government by Piñera was abismal and almost broke the country
