I got to select a service award gift today for giving my university ten years of my life. Options included a grill scraper, and a pearl necklace with only one fake pearl. I feel very appreciated.

😢
I got a ball point pen and a card as my service award after 25 years with my school board. The pen had the school board's logo on it and stopped working after a few months. So yeah, it could be worse - lol!
Shit in the deans office to show how appreciated you feel lmfao
I'm ngl I read that as a "gill scraper and a pearl necklace" and I was wondering what weird mermaid university you went too.
😐
I feel you. My last service award choices were a tie pin or a lapel pin.
I persuaded my spouse to take the 25-years-of-service portable plastic cooler thing with shoulder strap. Grill scraper could have been good…
Juuuuuuuust one. 1️⃣
I got a tie tack with the company logo on it.
Very much appreciated 😮💨
they must need the money more than you do
Two fake pearls would have been gaudy.
25 years as a Federal employee, and I got a pin with a fake diamond that only showed up in my 27th year. Hell, a grill scraper would be an upgrade.
The showing up 2 years later is very civil service.
Truly. All I got for my 10-year was a trip to Afghanistan, so I'd take the grill scraper as well.
You've been in uni ten years? I though the cycle was only 4 years
Yep, a decade.
I read this really weird. Like, it was a whole bunch of pearls, but only one was fake. Guess which! Also, that sucks. I'm sorry.
My reward for 14 years service last week was a redundancy notice... 😢
I've been at my institution 30+ years; we just get pins for Long Service, but legend has it there's a gift catalog for when you retire
Service award for 30 years with federal government is nothing
My ten year was a Cuisinart citrus juicer 🤣 It's been super useful actually (same with the fireproof document box I got for five years)
Not even a pearl-handled grill scraper?
I chose the camp lantern. I already own a camp lantern.
But now you have *two* Sad there was no juicer. Super helpful for mocktails and NA punches.
Someone took the singularity of "PEARL necklace" far too literally. x_x
you could play demolitions with it?
.... Yeah, id take the lamp too. 😑
Stay classy Ferris, stay classy
Sigh. Why are these gifts always so insulting. Honestly, I think it would be better if you just got a form letter for your anniversay.
Genuinely, yes.
Both 5 and 10 years were memorialized with lapel pins advertising those degrees of stubbornness. 15 coming soon... I'll try to act surprised
Do Americans get long service leave? Like I’ve seen yall talk about 10 year gifts from companies and stuff but in Aus what we get is gov mandated 8weeks of paid holiday. Which I think is in addition to normal holidays.
Lolololololololololololol No. No, we do not. The cheap and worthless gift is all we get. Hell, the signature on the form letter they give me to say thanks won't even be genuine.
And 8 weeks of paid holiday would be incredible. I get zero. Sick leave only. Which I can't really use. You know, because there's nobody to cover my classes. So I have to teach while ill. I currently have over a full semester of sick leave banked, because I can't use it. 683 hours. 17 weeks.
I've been at my job for three years and I get three weeks of paid vacation and one week of paid sick time. Cripes, I wouldn't put up with that
Their response is "its only a mines month contract. You get the whole summer off." *Unpaid*. And that's when I have to do my research work anyway, so I'm not actually off. Education has been utterly gutted in the US.
Oh now I get it. I don't want to make you jealous but ... Don't tell anyone If you move in Italia we have lots of holidays, especially if you work in educational system Shhhhhhh 🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫
I know very well, and I loved my time in Florence while I was there. But the EU makes it ***extremely*** difficult for someone to immigrate. And Italy is harder than average.
That is true, but believe me, all that youth need to do is to put a foot in. If you manage to get in the house nobody kicks you out. It's hard to find a job, especially for trans folks, and there's bigotry too, but I am sure the old Europe is easy better and more fair than the US.
Believe me, momma, you're not safe anymore with that fat orange Hutt in chief. Not even in your own house
I know. I can't leave without my family, Lilli.
Ohhh I understand. 😞
And I'm not youth. I'm 40, hun. It's... not that simple. For me, it'd have to be legal immigration or nothing. And I'm sorry, but Europeans have *absolutely no concept* of how brutally inaccessible almost all of your member nations have made immigration. There are like... 3 possible nations.
Ooh, and you know how common this problem is? In our union contract, if you retire after 20 years of service or more, they pay out your full sick leave balance. But not until then, you know. You only get 50% if you've only worked there a decade. America is such a dystopia.
But don't you know, Zoe? It's all so we have so much freedom! Isn't that great? /s
What freedom?
Fuck, I hate it here.
I feel like I'm going mad just reading this 😠
When you write down the everyday realities of American life, they're just so enraging, aren't they?
It is, in fact, utterly fucked. 😞
jesus christ. i think you get your leave and sick days paid out no matter how long you worked at a place over here. and i dont even understand this one but when youre on holiday. you get paid... an extra bonus. and its kinda significant percent.
Yeah, people basically never get their vacation leave paid out in the US. I wish I could leave. Other countries make it *incredibly* hard, though
I opted for an air fryer.
