They called out Bork for what he was, a full on partisan hack who had no business being nominated for SCOTUS. This is an ahistorical rescue mission blaming, as usual, the people pointing out the absurdity rather than the absurdity itself. The rhetoric was escalated because Bork's nom was repugnant.
