King and Conqueror made me nostalgic for The Last Kingdom. Or Vikings/Vikings Valhalla. Both series were so much more stylish, convincing and gripping. The mud, darkness and massacring here were really in Monty Python and the Holy Grail territory. What a shame....

Alexander Dremon did his best with the character, bless him. I used to enjoy the show just because it was so convincingly B movie level; but I am hard to please. this new effort sounds like it might not even be funny ?

I l'd felt really deprived that Vikings Valhalla ended before Hastings. It was the obvious climax. I guess I'd hoped that this would fill the gap. But no, sadly.

I haven't seen VV yet ... but TLK definitely felt anchored and convincing as you say

Things have come a long way since David Hemmings played the eponymous role in "Alfred the Great" with Prunella Ransome swanning around in something that looked a lot like a Laura Ashley dress. I don't remember any mud in the film at all.

I thought David Dawson was brilliant as Alfred in The Last Kingdom.

The writing is plodding. And it's so dark (literally - you can barely see what's going on). Juliet Stevenson is an enjoyably machiavellian Emma of Normandy. But it isn't enough.

And that’s a flashback to a movie-watching experience a friend strongarmed me into a decade ago. He knew I was just finishing my PhD in Psychology Lucy had just come out - where the premise was “we only use 10% of our brains” - I watched it at his request. No amount of Morgan Freeman voiceovers…

…could save it. That evening is also the benchmark for “how inebriated has my wife seen me” as I tried to block the pain with a large porter and then various cocktails. None of it helped.

Although one scene scored to Mozart’s Requiem is hilarious in ways the director probably didn’t intend. The prolific use of middling stock footage for other narrative elements was less endearing.
