You can basically guarantee that anyone calling himself a "cowboy" in 2025 1) has never actually moved cattle on a horse and 2) hasn't ridden a horse for any reason since the 90s. No serious cattle operation uses horses.

One of my favorite facts about cowboys from the days of cowboys actually being a viable career path is that lots, if not most, were black men or Latino men and they more or less all wore sombreros because sombreros are much better at keeping the sun off. Much cooler than beaver skin hats too.

If you look at pictures of cowboys from about 1850 to 1885 they are mostly non-white and look like they’re in a mariachi band.
