Out cruising?
Out cruising?
Yep. All of the boulder pics I've posted recently are from the area east of Cascade, Idaho. Nearly every hill is topped with gray boulders of all shapes and sizes. The scenery makes a good diversion from the usual daily work.
Weather looks a lot nicer, that's for sure. Are you working on the national forest or private tracts?
Private lands. Weather has been cooler than in previous summers. And of course the humidity is low.
I envy you. My last project was down by the okeefenokee and it was Brutal. Worst part was picking up pesticide-resistant fleas. Had to bug bomb my work camper like 4 times.
Wish I could head back out west. The parents need me to stay close, so I gotta hang around here.
I stopped working in the Georgia Coastal Plain a long time ago. Fleas were never an issue, but the heat, humidity, standing water, mosquitoes, and dense brush are enough to deter most field workers from stepping foot on that land!
You're not exaggerating. I found out from one of my clients down there that because SilvAssist records the actual plot location, they were catching a ton of cruisers just standing on the road entering plot data. Like, what's the point of even doing the inventory then
I did manage to get assigned to a project whose owner was a firm believer in herbicide and rx fire. Managed to get 31 plots done in 6 hours there!! Mostly a race against the heat though bc by the time I finished it was over 100
Yeah, it gets me that people still try to dry-lab their plots. They forget that GPS and software has ways of catching them. If you aren't willing to do the work right, don't take the job.
Yeah it's wild. My client told me that my whole reason for getting contracts is that they're having trouble finding foresters and techs who actually *want* to do the fieldwork. They all want inventory mgmt or silv desk jobs fresh out of school like that doesn't take a decade of field experience.
And meanwhile the majority of the time I'm out there, even when it's hot and nasty, I'm thinking "somebody is *paying* me to do this!? Then I am gonna do it right, and have fun while I'm out here."
resist!
