Just like Facebook, etc. You are the product. Your personal preferences are like gold to whomever can find a use for that information.

Right. But also - if you keep seeing the same material with nothing new, your personal preferences are a closed system, that doesn’t allow for natural change and updates. Which is highly problematic when you’re dealing with people decades behind the curve.

tik tok is the worst for this. you can watch, in real time, the algorithm change based on your level of interactions. I discovered when it starts feeding me dark or depressing videos I have to flick away every single video (at least 10) as soon as it pops up and then it's back to funny animal videos

key indicators are videos with walls of text overlayed on the video, specific musical additions, posts with a series of images you have to swipe right to see. are all gateways to a steadily escalating stream of dark shit. blocking doesn't help because that is "engagement" and you only get more.

It’s been the weirdest thing having a live in partner because I get to see what TikTok offers him and it’s awful. Look at a girl a little too long? Be shown terrible misogynistic shit for some time.

True. It's easy for us to find ourselves in our own bubbles here on BS, too. Another reason why it's important to get out and interact with your neighbors when you can.
