Yes. There is institutional knowledge at State. Mentors teach new diplomats the quirks and eccentricities of their assigned countries. Diplomacy requires nuance, a respect for the gray areas of life. And a trust of people. All of life is relationship driven. Times 10 when in service at State.

SO true. A group of us had dinner at a diplomat’s home. The wife put out glasses, cutlery and dishes for twenty like it was nothing. Her young son was practicing piano. But the most amazing thing was the conversation, somehow she discerned each of our interests and guided discussion accordingly.

I think the whole administration must make sure that no one is smarter or more knowledgeable than Trump so he won’t feel threatened. Lots of diplomatic staff is high on that list.

There's a lot of problems created by Doge and Trump following their massive layoffs across many U.S. government agencies: The loss of vital explicit and tacit knowledge (i.e., "brain drain"), and the impact on morale, productivity and innovation. Very few companies *ever* recover from mass layoffs.
